The fourth episode of the Canaan series entitled “cry of the soul” starts off with Maria locking herself in her room. After seeing Canaan kill the kid (last episode) Maria is starting to understand that Canaan is not an ordinary girl. She sits in her room for half the day until Mino finally takes her out for a nice Crab dinner. Note – they get the same awesome cab driver on the way to the restaurant. Oh yeah, the guy who drives like a maniac while blasting j-pop and who jumped them off a bridge and landed on top of an apartment building in episode 2. Other than that, half of the episode was taking up by Maria being annoying , and completely pointless rambling (yawwwwnnn). This episode provides some much needed character development on Canaan. It explains her house and family were wiped out due to war, and she was found/rescued by a man named Shan (or Siam?). This man took care of Canaan and taught her how to be a soldier. They grew very close until he was murdered by the leader of the snakes. We learn that Canaan is clouded with hatred and lives to seek revenge.
Finally a little bit of action in this episode (about 15 seconds or so) in a scene involving Canaan confronting the snake leader in a womens bathroom at a high profile event in Shang Hai. She tells Canaan that fighting out of hatred, is like mud; the more you struggle the more the darkness sucks you in (sounds like quicksand to me). Canaan gets her ass handed to her, but her rival lets her live as “she is still having fun with her”. The episode ends with Canaan running away with her tail between her legs.
I can’t say that this was a overly entertaining episode but was an improvement on last weeks. Hopefully now that Canaan’s past has been better explained the series will move at a quicker pace.
